Comments:

(by County)
  • ANNE ARUNDEL: Does exceptionally well and makes excellent wine
  • ANNE ARUNDEL: Warm nights during harvest can reduce flavors, grows well, few crown gaul problems,
  • ANNE ARUNDEL: We've produced a very nice Chardonnay
  • BALTIMORE: Nice Maryland wine grape
  • CALVERT: Just need a vigorous spray program
  • CARROLL: Fruit Quality is good, desease prone & needs attention, always sells out
  • CARROLL: Grows very well, good crop and consistent producer. Very susceptible to powdery mildew. If not kept an eye on, could lose entire crop
  • CARROLL: Have not been successful in growing it
  • FREDERICK: Spray all of the time
  • FREDERICK: We pulled ours out. Subject to spring frosts, due to early budding, also susceptible to mildews, needs summer pruning/hedging.
  • GARRETT: Buds so early that frequently endangered by spring frosts. Wine acceptable, but no better than from hybrids better suited to cond.
  • HARFORD: No growing problems, must stick with good spray program, leaf pulling a must.
  • MONTGOMERY: Consistenty good harvest. We have our mildew problems - but have learned from it and improved the spray program
  • QUEEN ANNE'S: 2nd and 3rd year leaf and seems to be very vigorous
  • QUEEN ANNE'S: Grows well here, be up on the sprays, humid weather will do it in
  • TALBOT: Too prone to powdery mildew

Early budding makes it suseptable to late frosts.

Considerations:
New world style is heavily oaked, frequently fermented in oak. Old world style is little or no oak.
