Basics: Believed to be a native North American variety.

Comments:

(by County)
  • CALVERT: New plantings so jury is still out but seem to be doing well
  • CARROLL: Does well, but needs extra time for shoot training and pruning, however, very disease resistant
  • MONTGOMERY: My Norton has grown extremely well, but the wine I have made from it has not been very good
  • QUEEN ANNE'S: Too early to tell, planted 1 acre as trial

Recommendations:
Vines are tolerant of common fungal infestations and easily protected with fungicides. Reported to resist Pierce's Disease. Crops are best enhanced with high training, preferably Geneva Double Curtain. Birds find Norton to be very attractive.

Considerations:
Deeply pigmented, aromatic full red wine has coffee and spice-like flavor with little or no "foxy" aroma, if problems with both high pH and high titratable acidity are appropriately addressed.
