Seyval Blanc
Basics: A French-American Hybrid particularly popular in England, also the East Coast of the United States, but maybe deminishing there.

Comments:

(by County)
  • ANNE ARUNDEL: Grapes grow very well but wine is very average.
  • BALTIMORE: Nice wine grape.
  • CALVERT: Grows great, few disease issue but easily treated with a good spray program and fruit ripens well.
  • CARROLL: Easy.
  • CARROLL: Potentially good quality, dependable.
  • CARROLL: Very hardy and grows well.
  • FREDERICK: The workhorse of the vineyard. Always produces; a bit too eager, probably will need fruit thinning.
  • HARFORD: Did well but we had it but pulled out due land limitations.
  • HOWARD: Disease-resistant, relatively low-maintenance, I can always count on good output.
  • MONTGOMERY: I don't enjoy growing Seyval - we had two good harvests, but it is hard to train and manage.
  • MONTGOMERY: My Seyval has grown extremely well, with an occasional botrytis problem, but the wine I have made with it has not been great.
  • ST. MARY'S: Sensitve to bunch rot.
  • TALBOT: Must be grafted-intolerant of root worm, tolerant of disease. Low sale value but makes great wine.

Recommendations:
Better in Western Maryland, than Eastern. Do not overcrop. Watch for powdery mildew. Can quickly rot in wet years.

Considerations:
Maryland and Virginia versions tend to be fuller and softer then those grown in cooler climates. Sometimes barrel fermented with malolatic introduced. Appears to be dropping in popularity.
